GIVE ME INFORMATION

There has been a lot of chatter about the NoTW phone hacking scandal and the role of journalists but at the end of the day journalists work in a business. If they don't get the story, they don't get the readers and this makes them edge towards taking greater risks, ever-increasing ones in these days of blogging and "citizen journalism".

Does this make what NoTW did right? No, of course not. However, it does raise once again a very important point which I am ever saying to friends who aren't in the industry - indeed to colleagues in the industry.

What interests the public is not the same as public interest. I do not think some footballer's sex life is in the public interest, unless his profile and commercial money-raising depends on his being portrayed as a family-guy. In the same way a politician that constantly bemoans single mums and feckless dads could spend his entire career shagging secretaries and prostitutes leaving a wake of illegitimate kids around is in the public interest.

It is this, of which all readers collaborate in, that has created a situation where NoTW shuts its doors today for the last time in 168 years.

UPDATE: NEWS OF THE WORLD TO (SORTA) SHUT

Aha, hear from sources, that this is apparently temporary - the rag is going to be rebranded.

I wonder what it will be called - The Sun on Sunday? The (Voice) Mail on Sunday?

James Murdoch's statement in full:

You do not need to be told that The News of the World is 168 years old. That it is read by more people than any other English language newspaper. That it has enjoyed support from Britain’s largest advertisers. And that it has a proud history of fighting crime, exposing wrong-doing and regularly setting the news agenda for the nation.

When I tell people why I am proud to be part of News Corporation, I say that our commitment to journalism and a free press is one of the things that sets us apart. Your work is a credit to this.

The good things the News of the World does, however, have been sullied by behaviour that was wrong. Indeed, if recent allegations are true, it was inhuman and has no place in our Company.

The News of the World is in the business of holding others to account. But it failed when it came to itself.

This Sunday will be the last issue of the News of the World. Colin Myler will edit the final edition of the paper.

In addition, I have decided that all of the News of the World’s revenue this weekend will go to good causes.

While we may never be able to make up for distress that has been caused, the right thing to do is for every penny of the circulation revenue we receive this weekend to go to organisations – many of whom are long-term friends and partners – that improve life in Britain and are devoted to treating others with dignity.

BLOG V JOURNOS

This has been an ongoing issue since the blogosphere appeared - does traditional media represent true journalism?

With the Times going behind a paywall, what function does a paper hold in the modern world?

WIth 24-7 news, why would someone pay to look at the news section of the Times when an app on their phone or a quick trip to one of the numerous newssites would give someone an overview of the world?

So what is the print media's function?

What is the model to counteract falling readerships and sales?

For newspapers, there is going to have to be a shift into views, comments and special features which are unique to the identity of the paper.

Also what coverage does a newspaper have?

The illustration below is based on a study by journalism.org which looked at the US stream and what is driving blogs, newspapers and twitterers.

By its very nature, the web can offer a broader, disparate number of views than traditional print. The complaint that the blog is not true journalism ignores the very origins of newspapers ie. the pamphleteers.

Blogs and tweets are the modern equivalent - people pushing their opinion onto the public.

If the pay-model for traditional media fails then we could see media falling into a world of citizen-journalism, one powered by personal opinion rather than driven by commercial, editorial, owner-needs.

A world where every person is plugged into their own network of information and opinion, not relying on pravda, newsinternational etc for news and views. A network where the person is relied on to filter through the rubbish.

Could it work? Or would a million voices drown out the one screaming "fire"?

JILTED JOHN

Oh how they sneered when they managed to wrest the other party's lover into their arms. For 12 years, they canoodled, played footsie under the table, shared their dreams.

But all things come to an end and the jilted lover is now screaming and tearing his hair out, "How could they do this to me," he screams. "I thought I was the one."

Two things to note Mandy - 1) Petty revenge is beneath you. It was your party that removed the Ashes in the first place so that, er, Sky could hoover up the rights.
2) You spent 12 years in bed with Murdoch so it is pathetic that you are now running around trying to persuade people that Cameron has done a deal with Murdoch. I didn't see your party trying to chase up the billions of pounds that News International and Sky must surely owe the exchequer. I didn't see Blair objecting to being feted in Australia by Murdoch.

So like all tragic breakdowns in relationships, I think the best thing for you to do is take a deep breath and have a nice cup of tea.
